BED BUYERS GUIDE

The bedroom is your sanctuary and as such is the most important room in your home. It’s a place you can rest and re-charge after a long day. Buying the right bed for this space should be a fun thing to do but before you dive in, make sure you have thought about what bed and features really suit your requirements.

Tip #1:

Choose your style?

Is your bed to be a feature in your bedroom, or would you prefer it to blend in with the style of your home? Here are some key points in choosing a bed style:

→ The age and architecture of your home
→ Your own design sensibilities
→ Does a contemporary or traditional bed design suit your space
→ The colour palette of your home
→ Does a timber or upholstered bedhead suit

Tip #2:

Decide on the quality

Long after price quality is remembered. Whilst you may need to pay slightly more for a bed manufactured locally, Australian made furniture offers superior quality and is made to last for decades.

To achieve the best value for money on your budget, always consider the life expectancy of a bed. Quality beds last upward of 25 years and will always represent better value than a lower priced product that may last less than 5 years. The key points to know when deciding on quality:

→ Quality is relative to product life
→ Be prepared to pay a little extra for quality. It will pay you back in spades.
→ The benefits of Australian made are significant
→ Make sure the warranty has a genuine time span

Your bedroom is quite likely the space where you spend most of your hours at home. If there is one room to invest in quality, this is it.

Tip #3:

Choosing the bed size

Bed size is generally relative to room size, however it is recommended to have at least 1 metre walking space around each side of the bed. For sleeping comfort, bed length should ideally be 15 cm longer than the tallest occupant.

The key points to know when deciding on bed size:

→ Make sure your preferred bed design comes in a number of sizes
→ Ensure the matching casegoods also have size options
→ Select the bed size with sleeper comfort as a priority

Know your space. This will enable you to select the right size of furniture that will not make the room feel cramped or awkward. Choosing furniture that can be accommodated comfortably by your bedroom is paramount.

Tip #4:

Construction quality

In regard to timber types and joinery techniques, native Australian hardwood timbers and historically trusted joinery, such as dovetail joints represent high quality construction.

Bed base ventilation to the mattress is also important. Bed frames constructed with solid timber slats and adjustable leg supports allow air to flow freely.

Tip #5:

Base storage options

Many people choose to have extra storage in the bedroom. Clever bed storage designs have risen in popularity due to their improved aesthetics and contemporary functionality.

Whether to declutter or to store everyday items, people choose storage beds for practical reasons. Let’s be honest, you can never have too much storage, particularly in the bedroom.

Bed designers have been busy incorporating clever storage into bed frames. Bed storage options include:

→ Floating base
→ Gas Lift base
→ Gas Lift Combo (also has under bed drawers)
→ Under Bed drawers on each side of the bed (we call this East West)
→ Under Bed drawer in the foot end
→ Blanket Box foot end

It’s important that bed storage is easy to access, looks and performs in an aesthetically pleasing manner, and is a reasonable size.

Tip #6:

Technology and other features

Today we expect beds to provide more than just beauty of design and excellent support for your mattress. Functionality has become increasingly important. Here are some practical options to consider.

Do you like to read in bed? If so, you would appreciate the comfort of an upholstered bedhead.

How important is base height to you. Does a high or low bed suit you?

What about storage? There are many ways to achieve this – see Tip#5 above.

Would an adjustable electric base be beneficial for you?

Or maybe something as simple as built in lighting and USB charging ports?

Lastly, beds that adjust to various sitting positions have become increasingly popular. Whether it’s for reading in bed, catching up on social media, watching TV, or for health purposes, being comfortable in a variety of positions can make you feel very content.
